This Iteration: Validation

What Tom validated about the current design:

  • Cash vs investments split in overview - "I think having it split out already makes a lot of sense"
  • Forecast chart with split - "That's really the one... that split is what we need to see"
  • Top banner KPIs - Helpful for quick sense-check of cash position
  • Overall direction - "Now I feel like we have high level validated that we're going in the right direction"

Forecasting Approach (Important Nuance)

Tom clarified what he wants vs doesn't want for investment forecasting:

YES - Show this NO - Don't do this
Current investment values carried forward as flat line Predict when he'll make new investments
Known time deposit maturities (show the drop when it matures) Predict investment transaction amounts
Updates when actual values change Pattern-based forecasting of buy/sell activity

Why: His investment activity is sporadic and doesn't follow predictable patterns, so transaction predictions would be noise. But he absolutely wants to see investment balances in the forecast view.

Future Iterations: Suggestions

Ideas Tom raised for future development (not blockers for current iteration):

High Value

  • Maturity profile in chart - Show when investments mature/become available. "When is that available for me is the big one."
  • Liquidity tagging - Tag investments by liquidity (T+0 / same-day vs locked) to separate "available cash" from "invested cash"

Medium Value

  • Investment type breakdown in header KPIs - Sub-divide by type (money market funds vs term deposits) for quick visual check
  • Investment detail view - Click on investment line to see: bank, rate, maturity, currency
  • Document attachments - Attach trade tickets/bank confirmations to investment records

Longer Term

  • Scenario planning - Beginning of month planning: "In February, invest X with Deutsche Bank, X with..." then track against plan
  • Alerts/suggestions - "Email me if I need to log in at any point in the month"

Questions Asked

  • How will investments be forecasted? → Naive approach for now (current value carried forward, updates when value changes)
  • Would this support scenario planning? → Acknowledged as valuable future extension
  • Can you split by liquidity type in the chart? → Agreed as good idea, will consider for setup/management phase

Raw Feedback Quotes

"I think having it split out already makes a lot of sense." - Tom Thorn (on cash vs investments split)

"That split is what we need to see and also the maturity profile of those investments becomes really important because it's all well and good saying we have this total balance, but actually, when is that available for me is the big one." - Tom Thorn

"I'd rather not see forecasted items for investments because mine are quite sporadic. They're not always happening around the same time within the month." - Tom Thorn (Note: referring to predicted buy/sell transactions, NOT investment balances - he wants balances shown as flat line projection)

"This essentially helps maybe in the future... we shouldn't be investing for one month. Or maybe money market funds aren't the preferred investment. We can say, no, we should invest two or three months because we're comfortable with how much cash we're going to have. This is really that unlocks that decision." - Tom Thorn

"That's one of the selling points of the tool, you know, for me internally is that it takes those kind of decisions from a bit of guesswork and making overly conservative decisions to actually being able to make more informed decisions with comfort and confidence." - Tom Thorn

"If there was ever a split that we could see where you have cash, T plus zero liquidity and then everything else, that might be a good suggestion." - Tom Thorn (on liquidity tagging)

"A full scenario plan like that, if you could lock that in and have that as a reference point throughout the month would be great." - Tom Thorn (on scenario planning)
